Three women with curly hair . The women's hair colors are brown, black and blonde

Every woman with curly hair has the same dilemma: How do you fix your curls so that they stay in place for the entire day? How do you revive your curls without washing them? And how do you protect your curls overnight?

To answer these questions, we consulted with Omer Asaf, Natural Formula’s chief hair designer, and together we created this guide to styling curly hair

Revive your curls instantly

Styling products are absorbed better when hair is damp, especially if your hair is curly. The ideal way to revive your curls is to wash hair, slightly dry it and apply styling products (each woman has her own set of styling products that suits her curl type). In the event that you can’t wash your hair but you want to revive the way it looks, take a spray bottle, fill it with clean water and spray your hair until it’s damp but not wet. Then apply your desired styling products.

The secret to gorgeous, lasting curls

How do you style the perfect curls and lock them in place for the entire day? With three easy steps:

  1. Apply styling cream on damp (not wet!) hair, along its entire length.
  2. Add Curl-Sculpting Mousse and scrunch your curls.
  3. Finish with a blow dry, and use HOLDING Styling Spray to lock curls in place for the entire day.

Don’t sleep with wet hair

Going to sleep with wet hair means that you’ll wake up with unruly curls that are all over the place and impossible to tame. Not a great move.  If you have no choice and you have to wash your hair before you go to sleep, try to dry it, even just a bit. Then apply styling cream and put your hair up in a loose pony tail. You can also braid your hair (but not a tight braid) and apply Ampoule Intense Serum so that in the morning when you open your braids, you’ll have beautiful, radiant and manageable curls.

How do you apply styling cream?

Many women with curly hair make the basic mistake of not applying styling cream correctly. When you apply styling cream the right way, you have abundant, uniform and spectacular, long-lasting curls. All you have to do is apply cream, scrunching it into your hair from the tips to the roots, or alternately in straight downward motions from roots to tips, and shake hair.

Combing curly hair

Brushing curly hair is not a good idea. It opens curls and turns them into a frizzy mess. A much better idea is to use a wide-toothed comb which will open knots but maintain the texture of natural curls. And though you can also comb hair when your hair is damp, it’s best to comb curls when you’re in the shower and the conditioner or mask is still in your hair. Combing hair in the right direction is also important, from the bottom, up.

Why it’s best not to touch curly hair with your fingers

Touching your hair with your fingers and palms opens curls and damages its texture. The bottom line: touch your curls as little as possible.

The secret to instant radiance

Curly hair tends to be dry and lack luster. But working correctly with Ampoule Intense Serum can change that and give you softer, more radiant hair in seconds.

Omer Asaf, Natural Formula’s chief hair designer shares his expert tips to help your curly hair look great all the time. Don’t believe it? Try these tips and find out that beautiful and manageable curly hair is totally possible!

Stage 1: Choose the right products

Curly hair has a tendency to be dry. That’s why it’s important to choose high-quality products that don’t contain ingredients like SLS and parabens. These ingredients exist in almost every shampoo and they dry out hair and weaken it so that it is more prone to breakage and fading (if you color your hair). Also, because of curly hair’s tendency to be dry, it’s important to choose products that nourish hair and add a decent dose of good, high-quality moisture. That’s why we recommend products that combine an ampoule treatment.

Stage 2: Learn the right way to shampoo your hair

Over-washing curly hair dries it out, causes more breakage and gives it more volume than it needs. Instead, wash it less; as little as possible – not more than twice a week. And after washing, use an SLS and paraben free conditioner and hair mask. We recommend alternating between a conditioner and mask each wash.

Four bottles of Keratin Intense series - shampoo, conditioner, mask and serum

Stage 3: Dry and Enjoy Your Defined Curls

There are many ways to dry your hair. Below are two ways, that in our opinion are the best. But it’s very important to experiment with several ways to dry your hair before you choose what’s best for you.

Towel-dry hair — Use a microfiber towel and dry hair by patting it gently. Apply styling cream and turban-wrap your hair. Wait twenty minutes and remove towel. Why should you use a microfiber towel? Because it prevents static charges. By applying styling cream and turban-wrapping your hair, you’ll treat your hair to a deep, high-quality moisture treatment. And you’ll hair will thank you with beautiful, defined, radiant and supple curls. Make sure to allow your hair to dry naturally, until it’s completely dry.

Drying hair with a diffuser — A diffuser is a hair dryer attachment that helps define curly hair and keep it frizz-free. Attach a diffuser to your blow dryer and dry your hair. You’ll find that the diffuser dries your hair and also boosts and defines your curls.  How do you use a diffuser with hair products? Quite simply. Apply your regular styling products, usually styling cream and mousse, and flip your head over, drying it downwards. Scrunch your hair every so often until you achieve your desired style. Drying your hair with a diffuser is safer than drying your hair with a regular blow dryer; there’s less of a chance that it will burn your hair, and it will still give you perfect volume and curls.

Curls are challenging for most women; there are a number of curl types, and each type requires special treatment. That’s why the high-quality products that successfully tame curls are expensive. But not anymore. Natural Formula is changing that, with a new series of professional products that will give you salon-like curls.  And not only that, these new professional-curl products are both accessible and affordable.

There are three types of styling creams in the series:

Cream & Glaze for styling and defining curls, Cream & Coconut Oil for naturally radiant waves and curls, and Cream & Keratin for loose waves and curls.

All products are SLS and paraben free, and some are also sodium chloride salt free. And they’re all high-quality products especially for curly hair that tends to be dry.

Omer Asaf, Natural Formula’s chief hair designer, teaches you how to instantly create perfect curls. All you have to do, is choose your style.

The look: No-frizz, very defined and powerful curls

The product: Cream & Glaze. A combination of 70% cream with 30% glaze. The cream nourishes hair while the glaze defines curls, for a radiant look that lasts the entire day.

To achieve the look:

1. Apply a small amount and distribute evenly along the entire length of your hair.

2. Now apply more, this time scrunching hair. Concentrate on the ends of your hair as they have a higher tendency to dry out.

3. To define curls, twist strands around your finger and release.

4. Complete the look by drying with a diffuser.

The look: Natural, fresh and radiant curls

The product:  Cream & Coconut Oil. A nourishing cream rich in coconut oil, to repair severely dry and damaged hair – a phenomenon every woman with curly hair is familiar with. The cream is light, doesn’t weigh down hair and creates soft curls.

To achieve the look:

1. Apply a small amount and distribute evenly along the entire length of your hair, scrunching it as you move from the top to the bottom.

2. Now apply more cream to the ends and scrunch them, because ends are more prone to dryness.

3. Dry hair with a diffuser. As you dry, shake hair for a natural look

The look: Loose curls with less volume and no frizz

The product: Cream & Keratin. A nourishing cream that repairs hair thanks to the rich keratin protein that rebuilds hair strands from within. The cream is sodium chloride salt free and is especially suited for hair that has been straightened or has undergone a keratin treatment.

To achieve the look:

1. Apply to hair from the top downwards in straight pulling motions.

2. Add more to tips to fully moisturize the ends.

3. In order to reduce and control volume, use a blow dryer but do not brush. Dry from top to bottom.

A woman with brown curly hair

In order to achieve the ideal curl look, you need a deep understanding of your own curl type.

Understand your curl type? Great.

Here’s what’s in store for you:

  • Hydration and nourishment that will nurture your curls and help you achieve the look you’re dreaming of
  • You’ll save a considerable amount of money because you’ll stop buying products you don’t need

Don’t know your curl type yet? Don’t worry.

With the help of Omer Asaf, Natural Formula’s chief hair designer, we created this short guide to help you determine your curl type and learn which products you need to add to your curl-care arsenal.

Coily Hair

If you have small tight curls, commonly considered afro-textured, you’ve got coily hair. That means, your hair has a lot of volume and is difficult to tame.

The products you need:

1. First and foremost, you need Cream & Glaze professional styling cream that contains both cream and glaze to soften your rebellious and difficult-to-tame curls, while deeply nourishing them and preventing spilt ends. The cream will even prevent frizz so that you’ll be able to style your hair quickly, even in a matter of seconds! And it’s a non-greasy product and will make your hair shiny and radiant. Use a generous amount on damp hair.

Cream & Glaze

2. After you completely dry your hair (preferably with a diffuser), add Ampoule Intense Serum especially to hair tips, to nourish hair and add a radiant shine. Apply drops as you scrunch your hair, and as needed throughout the day.

Curly Hair

Big, round and well-defined curls mean you have curly hair.

The products you need:

1. Always have Cream & Coconut Oil on hand and apply it generously on damp hair. Take small sections of your hair, twisting them around your finger to define your curls. The cream and oil will deeply nourish your curls and make them soft and radiant.

2. Another must-have is Curl-Sculpting Mousse which you should apply directly after the Cream and Coconut Oil. The mousse will hydrate curls, revive them and lock them in place for longer.

Wavy Hair

If you have loose curls that look like you opened them with your fingers, you have wavy hair.

The products you need:

1. The most important cream for you right now is Cream & Keratin. Apply it on damp hair and then braid your hair or twist the ends into large buns; fasten to the top of your head with bobby pins. When your hair is fully dry, undo.  Your wavy tresses will look beautiful, soft and radiant.

2. Add a few drops of Ampoule Intense Serum. It’s absorbed quickly and easily and leaves hair soft, shiny and radiant.

A few curl-care tips you may want to adopt:

To reduce volume

A generous amount of moisturizing, styling cream will help you handle too much volume. In the event of too much volume after hair is dry, apply a few drops of serum. Using serum in addition to styling cream will reduce curl volume and add radiance to your hair. For best results, apply serum to dry hair.

Wash your hair less

Curly hair is at its best a day or two after it’s washed; the reason is because styling products combine with natural substances released from the scalp to weigh down hair. Two days after your wash your hair it won’t look as big, and will be easier to style; just be patient that first day or so, and don’t be so quick to wash it.

Hairspray will help you deal with high humidity

Before leaving the house, use Volume Styling Spray. The spray will hold your volume and curls for the entire day despite high humidity outside.

It took me years to start liking my curls. Though curls were cute when I was a kid, they turned more complicated when I became a teen, and into an absolute nightmare during my college years.

As a kid, I had cute curls. Sometimes, I (or my mother) would gather them into an adorable, bouncy ponytail. As a teenager, I started taking care of my curls and I got them to look good, or at least decent because I forced my mother to buy me expensive hair products that did the trick. She didn’t really have a choice, so she bought them.

When I finished college and went to live in an apartment with some roommates, I couldn’t ask my mother to buy me hair products anymore, so I tried other solutions. Except that I was always disappointed. That’s when I understood that I have no choice and that I have to invest in high-quality, professional products that can only be found at specialty stores. But the problem with those products was price. They were expensive. Very expensive. Especially considering the fact that that I needed to buy them often. There are probably some of you reading this who think I’m spoiled.  I swear, I’m not. For me, hair care products that manage to tame my hair and make me feel like I look good – that is, they define my curls and make them soft and bouncy instead of dry and limp, are a necessity.

And then I received a phone call that surprised me, excited me and made me curious, all at the same time. The writer of a beauty column for a local newspaper offered to have me try Natural Formula’s new hair care series for – finally – women with curly hair. She asked me if I was happy with the products that I was using and I answered that I was. She then asked me how much I pay for them and if I’m willing to try products that cost half the price. “Of course!” I replied, to which she responded “so try Natural Formula and tell me what you think.”

During the past weeks, I tried the products and used them according to the instructions I received from Omer Asaf, Natural Formula’s chief hair designer. And what can I tell you? It’s the invention of the year! Who would ever believe that I can just go to any drugstore instead of looking for specialty stores that carry the specific products I need? I don’t remember the last time I spent so little on my curls.

So here are the products that I tried:

I like it when my curls are free, loose, natural looking and don’t have too much volume (my curls have a tendency to have way too much volume, especially in the summer). I used Cream & Keratin professional styling cream, which gave me the look that I love for my curls.

I applied my new professional styling cream on my damp hair, applying it in pulling motions in order to open my curls as much as possible. I used a blow dryer, blowing from the top downwards (without using a brush), in order to control the volume. I received so many compliments from colleagues and friends who have curly hair. They even asked me for the name of my new cream!

In the evening, I wanted a fancier, more styled and put together look. So I used Cream & Glaze professional styling cream that gives curls a fuller look. I applied the cream scrunching my hair downwards, and then drying it with a diffuser. I received sooo many compliments.  Even my mother, who always preferred straight hair couldn’t hide her excitement. And if my mother’s excited – then it means that I look spectacular.

I gave my friend Nili, who also has a hard time taming her mane of curls, Cream & Coconut Oil that creates soft, natural and radiant curls. Nili tried tens of professional styling creams in her lifetime. She was especially impressed that the styling cream that I got her gave her perfect and round curls without too much work.
